Description:  Match-case (80 x 40 x 5 mm when closed) of thin leatherette, with four small side-flaps and larger tuck-in flap at top; exterior dark purple, with ornamental embossed designs, including a stag statant in a wood; interior lined with white paper, printed in script, in imperfect English, "Friction Tinder-Box. Manner of using the lucifer-matches:- The match is to be put between the paper sheets, the paper at the end of the match pressed, and to be drawn quick out, but so that the pressure does not touch the mass of the inflammation. Remark:- It is not necessarij to throw the match awaij if et don't tind, bij wearing them well theij must ijet inflame. Is bij long use the inside of the paper sheets [gets] worn out, it must be turned over and wasted in the same waij as above mentioned"; contains nine Matches (70 x 3 x 1 mm) with black heads, not sulphur-dipped, and piece of folded sanded cardboard; no maker's name; clearly made for the English market; date probably about 1832. ?
