Description:  Painting. [North Eastern coalfield: colliery pit-head] / W. Wheldon, 1845. - Oil on canvas, image 28x46cm octagonal with rectangular border, laid onto stretchered canvas, 38x56cm; museum board overmount; in wood (black, 2002) frame 47.5x65x5cm. - One of a pair. Each painting shows colliery pit head with associated coking ovens on the Northumberland and Durham coal field. This one also shows landscape with cable wagonway and pit-head buildings, coking ovens in the distance. Similar to scenes in: 'A series of views of the collieries of Northumberland and Durham' by TH Hair, 1844; coal mining; coke ovens
