Brief Bio:  first baronet, 1625-1695, diplomatist; natural philosopher; mathematician; inventor, English

Notes:  Devised a large number of improvements and inventions, for example, plunger pump (1675), speaking trumpet (1671), perpetual calendar, calculating machine, naval gun carriage, drum capstan, device for opening letters without breaking the seals;
Morland published 'A New Method of Cryptography' (1666), 'The Description and Use of Two Arithmetick Instruments' (1673), 'Perpetual Almanack and Several Useful Tables' (1673) and 'Doctrine of Interest both Simple and Compound' (1679).
served as the King's Master of Mechanics;
baronetcy 1660
1666, he also obtained a patent for making metal fire-hearths
